As always, winter tends to leave me busier than I anticipated while also combating a pretty vigorous desire to procrastinate. The severe lack of updates on this blog are pretty indicative of that contradiction. Sadly, I'll have to disappoint yet again, however, I will point you toward a few articles that should be read, circulated, and discussed.
Agriculture Department Tells Schools to Give Food a Healthy Makeover: NPR.
Chefs and Parents Plot a Lunch Revolution: Grist.
Demand for Quinoa a Boon for Bolivian Farmers: NPR.
(My two cents: This article, and the reactions to it, embody the success of globalization as the justification for continuous outsourcing of local products comes from the fact that it's the only way that these farmers can make a living. However, had globalization not occurred, these farmers could be sustaining their local community and their community would rely on them as a food source. Just because something has become "the way it is" doesn't mean it's the way that it should stay.)
